Highlights
A technology leader with one of the country’s largest steel research centers.
Operates steelworks in Ohio, Indiana, Kentucky, and Pennsylvania.
AK Steel produces a diverse line of specialty steels for the automotive, appliance, construction, and manufacturing markets. It is the only full-line domestic producer of energy-efficient electrical steels for power generation, power and distribution transformers, lighting systems and electric motors. In 1999 it merged with Armco, the nation's largest manufacturer of specialty steels, and in November 2000 it acquired Combined Metal Holdings. These moves expanded AK Steel’s product offerings, which now include flat-rolled carbon, stainless, and electrical steel products, as well as standard pipe and tubular steel products. In 2006 the company announced plans for a $55 million expansion that will increase production capacity for its high-quality, electrical sheet steels to 335,000 tons per year by 2008.
