The largest nonpartisan, nonprofit public interest law organization in the U.S., the ACLU is devoted to preserving the Bill of Rights through litigation, legislation, and education. Throughout the organization’s 83-year history, it has been involved in some of the most controversial cases in the country’s history—the Scopes “Monkey Trial,” Brown v. Board of Education, and Roe v. Wade, to name a few—and has vigorously opposed threats to civil liberties, especially free speech. Its 50-state network has offices in most major cities, and its more than 100 staff attorneys work with 2,000 volunteers to take on almost 6,000 cases annually. The ACLU is fully funded by annual dues from its more than 500,000 members, as well as contributions from individuals and private foundations. It does not accept government funding.
